What Is Success? (And How Do We Achieve It Together?)

Dear Parents, Staff, and Students,

On Tuesday morning, I posed a question to our students at assembly that I believe deserves a wider conversation鈥攐ne that involves every home and every classroom.

The question was simple, yet profound:聽What is success?

If you asked ten different people, you might get ten different answers. For some, success is a 90% pass in Mathematics. For others, it is making the first team, or earning a place at university, or simply making their parents proud.

All of these are worthwhile聽results. But as I told our students, results are like the fruit on a tree. You cannot harvest good fruit unless the roots, trunk, and branches are healthy.

So here is our school鈥檚 working definition for 2026:

Success is not a destination. It is a direction.
It is the daily choice to grow, to try, to fail, to get up, and to try again鈥攚ith your eyes open and your heart determined.

Why Are Successful People Successful?

This is the subsidiary question we explored. Is it because they are geniuses? No. Is it because they never failed? Absolutely not.

Successful people鈥攊n school, in careers, and in life鈥攈ave mastered聽two inner engines:

1. Self-Esteem:聽The quiet, unshakable belief that you are worthy of effort, worthy of time, and worthy of a good life. Without this, students sabotage their own success because they don’t believe they deserve it.
2. Self-Motivation:聽The internal fire that says,聽鈥淚 will do this not because someone is watching, but because I care about my own future.鈥�聽Motivation from outside (prizes, threats, or nagging) fades. Motivation from within endures.

Successful people also know a secret that many miss:聽they do what they are good at.聽In the academic world, this means choosing the聽right subjects for their ability鈥攏ot the subjects their friends take, not the subjects that sound impressive, but the subjects that fit their strengths, interests, and natural gifts. When you fight your natural ability, you tire yourself out. When you work聽with聽your ability, you fly.

Our Academic Goal: 100% Bachelor鈥檚 Pass is Within Reach

Now let me speak plainly about our school鈥檚 academic target.

At 麻豆传媒, we consider the pass mark for every subject to be聽50%. That is not a low bar鈥攊t is a聽minimum聽bar. It says:聽鈥淵ou understand enough to move forward.鈥�

We know that some students currently have marks below this level. But here is the truth鈥攁nd I say this with conviction:

If every single student changed their attitude鈥攊f they came to class to聽master聽rather than just to聽get through, if they asked questions when confused, if they helped one another, if they did homework as practice rather than a chore,聽and聽if they chose subject packages that truly fit their ability鈥攖hen we would not have 80% or 90% Bachelor passes.
We would have 100%.

That is not a dream. That is a mathematical certainty. Because the only thing stopping us is聽attitude鈥攏ot intelligence, not resources, not luck.

A Message to Every Student (and Every Parent)

To the student who got 49% or less last term:聽success is not shame.聽Success is asking for help聽today鈥攆rom a teacher, a tutor, or a parent who loves you.

To the student who got 80%:聽success is not resting.聽Success is helping the person next to you. Teaching someone else is one of the fastest ways to deepen your own understanding.

To the student who feels invisible:聽success is knowing that your value is not in a report card.聽It is in your character, your kindness, and your courage to keep showing up.

Four Simple Commands for a Successful Term

I left our students with four short principles. I invite parents to discuss these around the dinner table, and staff to reinforce them in class:

1. Know your worth聽鈥� You are not a number. You are a person with unique potential. That is self-esteem.
2. Own your effort聽鈥� Do not wait for teachers or parents to push you. Push yourself. That is self-motivation.
3. Play your position聽鈥� Choose subjects and activities that fit your abilities. Do not compare your path to anyone else鈥檚.
4. Rise together聽鈥� Your success is linked to your classmate鈥檚 success. When we all pass, we all win.

A Final Word to Our School Community

Parents, I ask for your partnership. Please encourage your children not just to聽get marks, but to聽build character. Praise their effort, not just their results. Ask them:聽鈥淲hat did you struggle with today, and how did you handle it?鈥�聽rather than only聽鈥淲hat did you get?鈥�

Staff, thank you for the daily work of nurturing both minds and hearts. You are the architects of this transformation.

And students鈥擨 want you to repeat this to yourselves, not just today, but every morning:

鈥淚 am capable. I am responsible. I will not give up on myself.鈥�

Because success, 麻豆传媒, is not about being the best in the world. It is about being the best you have ever been鈥攖oday, tomorrow, and every day after.

Let us make this term the one where we change our attitude鈥攁nd change our results forever.
